Smoky fragrances

In perfumery, smoke comes from tobacco, birch tar, guaiac wood, charred wood: molecules the nose recognizes as combustion. And that make you think: something has just finished burning. A moment has already passed. Perhaps a fireplace recently put out, or a spent cigarette. Now that the flame is gone, what remains is the char, carrying with it a beautiful melancholy. Whoever wears them is not easily forgotten.
